Why Semicolon is Being Associated with Depression
DEPRESSION – Usually, the symbol semicolon is associated with depression and is found in talks about the said condition.
Recently, lots of people on the social media posted a photo of a semicolon symbol. Most of them did it to express sympathy to the family of the late Isaiah Lustre and to express comfort and show love to other people who are struggling with depression.
The semicolon trended on social media after Isaiah, the younger brother of Kapamilya actress Nadine Lustre, died at the age of 16.
Based on a report, previously, there were news stating about the death of the brother of Nadine. It was confirmed after a relative of the actress posted on social media a request for a prayer for the soul of Isaiah Lustre.
Reportedly, the 16-year-old suffered from a gunshot. It was around 7:45 in the evening when his siblings heard two gunshots coming from his room. When he was checked, he was found sprawled.
Isaiah was rushed to the hospital but he did not survive. Yesterday, he was supposed to turn 17. Nadine discovered a blog site owned by her brother and some of his posts talked about depression and “emptiness”.
Based on a recent report in Pep, Nadine Lustre, his boyfriend actor James Reid, Lauren Reid, Bret Jackson, and their other friends posted a semicolon symbol on their social media accounts.
According to the report, in 2015, the semicolon symbol trended on the social media after lots of individuals have it as tattoos. The said social media craze was initially tagged as a “millennial trend” but the symbol rapidly became associated with talks about depression.
The report also entailed the usage of semicolon according to the University of Wisconsin-Madison which is “to join two or more ideas (parts) in a sentence…” Reportedly, as a symbol, it stands for continuation.
Based on Pep’s report, in 2013, a non-profit organization named Project Semicolon moved to put up a community which aims to prevent people from taking their own lives. The said organization is based in the United States.
Citing an article in UpWorthy in 2015, the report stated that the Project Semicolon described their group as a “movement dedicated to presenting hope and love” to people including specifically those who are suffering from depression.
Based on the report, the organization members take the semicolon symbol as a way of saying, “I’m still here.”
