This is one of the hand gestures that has a lot of meaning. Based on the article, this is not the “I love you” symbol in ASL, which requires the thumb to also be out.

The origin of this gesture can be traced is the field of music as this is popular in rock or metal concert. It was attributed to Ronnie James Dio in the late 1970s, however, he clarified that he got it from his Italian grandmother to ward off the “evil eye” and bad luck. Reportedly, Dio’s grandmother might have got this from Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula.
