Then, in 1878 a patent was submitted by Brooklynite Richard Knudsen. His invention had two parallel sets of tracks, each of which progressed from a height down to ground level. The car would go down one set of tracks, whereupon it would be raised by a lift mechanism to the top of the other set of tracks. This will make it go back and forth all day. At that time, it carried four people at a time.
