The actual social media history commenced in 1994 when David Bohnett and John Rezner created GeoCities where users can create their own sites within the platform. In 1999, Yahoo acquired this but was shut down in 2009.

In 1997, the Six Degrees social network was created. This allowed the users to create profiles, add friends and relatives, and invite new people to join the network. Users can also post on their bulletin boards and they can also see their connection with other users. Unfortunately, this social media platform has a short life span as it was shut down in 2000.
