She was a fashion designer who made evening wear, tea gowns, lingerie, and movie costumes. Duff-Gordon was among the survivors who were surrounded by controversies. It was said that she and her husband, Cosmo, boarded  Lifeboat 1 with only 12 people on it when in fact, it can accommodate 40 people. Rumor has it that Cosmo paid the crewman not to go back to rescue others.
