Nestle, the company behind this famous chocolate bar, Joseph Rowntree, the confectioner, officially coined the name and started selling it in 1935. However, the company also said that the term already appeared on a boxed assortment of chocolates in the 1920s that Rowntree’s made.

The name Kit Cat officially came from the 18th century Whig literary club titled after a man named Christopher Catling.
