Most Disturbing Psychiatric Treatments In Human History
Insulin coma therapy
Manfred Sakel, a Viennese physician, accidentally discovered this treatment in 1927, when he gave his diabetic patients an insulin overdose. The patient was in a coma after that. When the patient woke up, she claimed that her morphine craving was gone as she was a drug addict.
This kind of scenario happened again to another patient of Sakel and eventually, he started doing this method intentionally. However, its popularity faded due to its danger as between one and two percent of patients who underwent this treatment died.
