In the case of the paintings in the El Castillo cave, based on the article from BBC, which archaeologist Marcos Garcia Diez said was a sacred place for ancient hunters, the ocher was used to paint images of animals.

Ethnographers theorized that images of prized sources of meat were painted on the cave as “hunting magic”. With the shamanistic belief, ancient hunters believed that they can summon the animals by the paintings.
