He was a professional tennis player and became Hall of Famer who boarded the ship to pursue Helen Newsom, the woman he wanted to marry and was with her family for a vacation.

After surviving, he became successful in tennis and in banking. He died at age 64 in 1949 and his granddaughter Helen Behr Sanford shared that the accident haunted his grandfather as he wished that he was able to save anyone.
