Based on the article in Reader’s Digest, Southland Ice Company started selling common grocery items and beer out of its icehouses. This business boomed and so the icehouses became convenience stops.

It was called “Tote’m stores” and the logo used the totem pole as the T. In 1946, several Tote’m and City Ice shops of Southland were established.
