Based on the article from Forbes, no one could explain what happened exactly. Because of this, various speculations regarding the drastic event surfaced.

Among the speculations were it was a secret government experiment, strange invisible superweapons, or even a series of atomic explosions. Later on, it was identified what the real culprit was – a strange and rare volcanic phenomenon that was associated with the nearby Cameroon Lake Nyos.
