The railroad industry was the one responsible for standardizing our time zones. Villages synchronized their clocks to the local solar noon, back in the 19th century. The United States and Canada began using a system on November 18, 1883, that was very similar to the standardized time zones we still use today. The standard London-based time in 1840 is being used in the UK.
