A theory stated that this gesture was an effort to ensure no soldier had ill intentions during the time when assassins were more prevalent in the military as well as in the government. In another theory, it was said that this was used by knights when they lifted their visors to show their identities to superiors. Now, this gesture that is mostly used by military men, signifies respect.
