Tamagotchi was programmed to evolve in relation to how the player takes care of the virtual pet. It will beep and would demand the player to feed, clean up, and even discipline the pet.

If taken care of properly, the pet will become a well-mannered adult Tamagotchi and if not, the pet will be delinquent, and if ignored, it can die. In the Japanese version, a tombstone will signal death but in the American version, the pet will return to its home planet.
