Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh is one of the most famous painters of the post-Impressionist period and several of his famous paintings were made during his confinement in an asylum.

He voluntarily admitted himself to St. Paul de Mausole Asylum in St. Remy de Provence on May 8, 1889, as his mental health was rapidly declining.
