The song was officially released on October 31, 1975, but Freddie Mercury started writing this in 1968. Based on the article from Mental Floss, back then, Freddie was a student at London’s Ealing Art College.

The first line, “Mama, just killed a man”, came to him but there was still no melody. At that time, Freddie gave it the working title The Cowboy Song because of the lyrics that gave him the Old West feel.
