Geechee Red Pea

West and Central African slaves bought this pea to the Atlantic coastal areas of the American South, including Sapelo Island, Georgia. As the area was so remote, slaves were able to continue observing their traditions. The Geechee red pea is a main ingredient in the traditional Gullah dish, “Reezy Peezy,” made with unripe peas and Carolina Gold rice.
