At first, Adams and his son tried to develop the chicle into a useful industrial substance, like rubber. However, they came up with a better idea and made it into chewing gum.

“By the late 1880s, Adams gum was sold widely…They produced five tons of chewing gum daily,” Matthews wrote in her book.
