6. Aretha Franklin

Iconic singer-songwriter Aretha Franklin who was dubbed as the Queen of Soul died at the age of 76 without a clearly valid will. Her estate was worth around $18 million at the time of her death. Only handwritten documents were found in her house – one of which was found under the couch.

The wills had different directions as to the distribution of the wealth and they sparked conflicts among her sons. In July 2023, the court ruled that the more recent will which was found under the couch must be followed.
