Aside from the symbolism behind the five rings representing the five continents that participated in the 1912 Games, the Olympic Charter’s Rule 8 also started this: “the Olympic symbol expresses the activity of the Olympic Movement…and the meeting of athletes from throughout the world at the Olympic Games.”
