Actor-director Fernando Poe, Sr. was believed to be the model of the “Oblation”, the symbol and touchstone of the University of the Philippines.

Guillermo E. Tolentino was commissioned by then-president Rafael Palma of UP to create the statue. The “Oblation” was funded by the enrollees in 1935 and was inspired by the Mi Ultimo Adios poem of Jose Rizal.
