The invention was called the “Inclined-Plane Railway.” However, Knudsen apparently never built this device and so it was attributed to LaMarcus Adna Thompson, a Sunday school teacher, and dimestore moralist. It was because of his Switchback Railway invention which was built at Coney Island in 1884 and that inaugurated the “gravity pleasure ride” industry.
