In an interview in 1927, Anna Jarvis said that the original flower for Mother’s Day was the carnation, the favorite of her mother Ann Jarvis.

“The carnation does not drop its petals, but hugs them to its heart as it dies, and so, too, mothers hug their children to their hearts, their mother love never dying,” Anna said.
