Statue Of Liberty: Knowing The History Of The Iconic Monument
On July 4, 1884, the statue was disassembled after it was presented to Levi P Morton, the U.S. minister to France. The parts were shipped to the States through the French Navy ship, Isère.
By June 17, 1885, the monument has reached New York Harbor however, the pedestal was not finished yet at that time. It was just reassembled on Bedloe’s Island a year after that. Fort Wood was still on the island but it became part of the monument.
When the pedestal was finished, the construction crew, many of them were new immigrants, assembled the parts with surprising speed.
