The Lord Of The Rings: Facts About J.R.R. Tolkien’s Saga

TLOTR sequel, as the author said, will take place a century after the death of Aragorn. The story will involve a cult that worships Sauron and they spread evil through the land.  “I could have written a ’thriller’ about the plot and its discovery and overthrow — but it would have been just that. Not worth doing,” Tolkien wrote after finishing two scenes.
