Signal Flares

The idea of signal flares did not directly come from Martha Coston. She just found plans in a notebook that belonged to her late husband who was a naval scientist. The widow spent 10 years working with chemists and pyrotechnics experts in order for her late husband’s ideas to come to life. In the 1859 patent, Martha was only named as the administratrix and the inventor was credited to her late husband.
