Bernstein said that he was developing the idea of Happy Meal in 975 or 1976. McDonald’s St. Louis regional advertising manager Dick Brams and Paul Schrage, the senior vice president of McDonald’s, were aware of the Fun Meal of Burger Chef. Bernstein said in an interview in 2019 that he had already been working on a design for a kid-friendly package meal when Brams contacted him.
