He was the owner of the ship and he was portrayed as a coward in the press and as a villain in 1997’s Titanic. However, Ismay’s grandson said this in an interview: “There were a lot of lies in the American press about him escaping on the first lifeboat and dressing up as a woman and things like that, which must have deeply hurt him.”

Cheape also said that his grandfather appeared to have suffered from post-traumatic stress. Ismay died in 1937 at age 74.
